My interest in plants is actually pretty separate from my science! I was never as interested in plant science as i was microbiology, but i LOVE growing houseplants, to see them grow new leaves and shoots! That all started when my mum bought me a plant to take to university to keep me company!
The only overlap was in one of my previous projects, when i was looking for bacteria who were able to break down pollutants found in air, that lived on the surfaces of leaves! Which was pretty exciting, but they were all outside plants!
Actually yes my husband got me into growing plants. Even though I am a biologist I always studied animals (mostly insects) and never really knew much about plants. But my husband studied horticulture and went to an agricultural university and is a little bit obsessed with plants and now that has also rubbed off on me! Since moving to the UK I have gone on lots of walks in the countryside and woodlands to try and learn more about the different plant species here.
