That’s a great, but difficult question! We don’t really know what the Universe is, to start with. It could be that it is infinite, it could be that we are living on a 4-dimensional sphere, or sort of donut, without realizing it (some theories like string theory predicts this).
There is a theory called the ‘multiverse’. The idea is that there exist many Universes in which the rules of physics are different, and that it is just random that our Universe is what it is. Maybe we can see our universe and exist only because we are lucky enough to live in the only Universe where life is possible…
However, what i just wrote does not really answer your question… The question of the origin of the Universe is a very tricky one. We can only come up with theories (religion may be one of them) to understand how everything started. The biggest problem to answer the question is that the Universe was very dense at early time, so light could not propagate through it (like in the fog, there is a lot of humidity, so you can’t see through it). That means that we cannot see infinitely far in the Universe using optical telescopes.
It could be that in the future we can use gravitational wave detectors to see further back in the history of the universe, but gravitational wave detection is still a very young technique, it just started a few years ago. By the time you graduate from University I’m sure we will know much more, and you are very welcome to join us try to answer your question then!
We know our Universe started with the Big Bang, but we don’t know what caused the Big Bang or what happened before it!
There is a theory that multiple universes exist, which were all created by Big Bangs (the multiverse), but this theory is incredibly hard to prove!
