There is a theory, often called the Many-Worlds theory, that suggests there are alternate universes, which exist in parallel to the one we live in. The idea is that every time there is more than one possible outcome to a quantum experiment, each outcome does happen but in different worlds and we only see one of these. This would then suggest that there must be billions of alternate worlds! Personally though, I don’t support this interpretation, but as with all theories like this, until it is proven otherwise, it still exists as a possibility!
