Well I’d quite like to invent a fully functional quantum computer 😀 It’s one of those things that will take a lot of work from a lot of people though — I doubt I’ll be able to claim much credit for it if we ever do make one. Actually there are some people who say they already have, but most of the scientific community think they’re just using the name ‘Quantum Computer’ for something slightly different…
In my field of work it is almost impossible to discover something working alone, things are too complex to be done by a single person or even a small team. So my hope to is contribute with my time, ideas and knowledge to a better understanding of the Higgs boson and possibly to the discovery of new particles such as dark matter candidates during the next few years. On the long run I hope to make a strong impact to the design and construction of the next big machine in particle physic, and to live long enough to exploit it to uncover even deeper secrets of Nature.
Same as Michele has said. It is difficult in our field to discover something by yourself as it takes a lot of people a lot of time to prove/disprove a theory with experimental data/observation. But if I was to invent ANYTHING in the world… I think it would have to be time-travel or teleportation. Traveling back in time would be amazing as we could clear up all those questions in our history books! Plus you could see pivotal moments in physics as they are happening which would be pretty cool. Also teleportation would save me soooooooo much time travelling to/from uni/work every day – which would leave me more time to play my Xbox 😉
