Samuel Ellis answered on 7 Jan 2022:
Well my parents always say I was quite annoying as a kid because I always used to ask them how everything worked and why. So I guess that sort of curiosity ultimately led to my interest in science! Probably high school when I seriously started thinking about science or medicine as career choices though.

While I always liked Biology, I only really got drawn into science when I took Psychology as I was completely fascinated by the neuroscience segment of that class. This lead me to looking into neurobiology more and, from there, genetics. So I can into science later and sideways 🙂

I think for me it was a book from the school library that said that science as going to solve/cure every disease known to man in the next 100 years… I don’t think that’s actually true but science has made loads of progress in helping people with different illnesses and I wanted to be part of that. 🙂

I think I have always been interested. I would constantly be asking my parents about everything. I specifically got interested in epidemiology when the Foot and Mouth outbreak hit. This personally impacted many friends and family. It drove me to want to understand and fight back against disease outbreaks.

I started to like science after doing experiments in school.
But, I only started to love science when I was doing my research project during my last year of my Undergraduate degree. It was really cool to see what happens to the cancer cells I was growing when I was giving them different treatments. I think I loved the creativity of experiments and finding out what will happen when you do an experiment. -

A defining moment for me was the moon landings in 1969 and the Apollo 13 recovery in 1970. In the case of Apollo 13 we were all completely gripped by the drama of it all and my primary school teacher made a big thing of it. The fact that the scientists managed to get the astronauts back made me want to be a scientist.

There wasn’t a single moment for me. I always loved writing essays and arguements in English/Law but was also fascinated by how our body’s are able to fight off infection. That naturally led to biology and it was during my undergraduate degree that I fell in love with immunology.
