Our team is still actively hiring, so we do want more people! For two different roles.
We sequence 64,000 Covid genomes a week, so our lab is very busy and we need several shift patterns to get to this goal, so that means lots of people to make sure the lab is busy 7 days a week from 08:00-20:00.
I have a team of 30 mathematicians and statisticians working on real world problems which very much includes working in Covid. We also work on other problems such as climate change, green energy, and medical imaging. We are constanrty hiring new people as there is so much to do!
Personally it is just me and my boss at the moment, so I’d love more people in our lab!
But science does train too many PhD students for the number of available (academic/university) positions so we should really be thinking about whether that is fair to do and we need to change how PhD student training works – to focus away from just academic science training and more to non-academic careers. Might not be what people necessarily want to hear but this is the reality of the current system.
