Question: if you were going to talk to a class about your job but you only had five minutes to do so including answering questions, what would you say?
I would tell them all about the tree frogs in my lab, and about how they have special toe pads which allow them to climb in all sorts of environments. I’d explain about how the frogs can stick using their pads, and why this is interesting for humans to look at.
I’d talk about how important hospital laboratories are. Most people don’t even know they exist and think the doctor measures your blood sample! It’s very important to have a streamlined system in the lab to make sure that we can analyse the samples as soon as they come in because we receive about 5000 a day. I’d also say the different types of chemicals and molecules we measure, although it is a long list… the result can help the doctor to come up with a diagnosis or rule it out if the result is normal.
