My research goes into building huge projects like the LHC at CERN which investigates fundamental physics. Lots of technology and discoveries come out of these huge project that no one would have expected – such as the internet, which we are using right now!

Who knows what will come out of the next big project.

It might not…unless you have a horse (some of the research I have done has helped make better vaccines against ‘flu in horses)…I got used to the idea early in my career that often the research we do is just putting a piece in the jigsaw – only occasionally does someone make a big breakthrough and become famous – luckily, most scientists are not in it for fame and fortune…

I don’t get to do much research in the lab because we’re providing a routine service for the hospital. The research that I have done and will hopefully do in the future will help you if you ever have to go into hospital and need a blood test taken. There are always new tests that are being brought into the hospital lab.
