The first ‘test tube baby’ was born the same year I was born. First you give the mum-to-be hormones to help her over produce eggs (ova). You then collect these in a small operation. In a petri dish in the lab you wash the sperm and leave them with the egg to fertilise. Sometimes the sperm just don’t do it right and the DNA of the sperm needs to be directly injected into the egg (intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection). Once the egg is fertilised it is left to divide a few times to make sure it’s healthy and then either frozen for later use or transferred back into the mum-to-be’s uterus to grow into a baby. All very stressful and takes a lot of time. Very few people are lucky to get pregnant on their first go with this.
