Well you can approach this from 2 directions;
– We have nails as we evolved from apes who of course would have had claws.
– We still have them because they are useful to us. They protect our fingers and toes (imagine how much more it would hurt if someone stood on your toe and there was no nail there to protect it), they help make our fingertips more sensitive for example for picking things up, and they are very useful for scratching.
Vee is absolutely right, before we worked out how to make tools, claws were the only things be had to rip things apart. As we evolved these claws developed into nails – which are still very useful . nails are really useful as an indication of health too. Ridges and white spots can tell us a lot about underlying health issues and diet.
