As with most things it’s difficult to predict and it depends on who you talk to. It seems from the pharmaceutical industry point of view that these companies are all getting smaller – rather than relying on having all the research done by their own scientists they now seem to be working with smaller companies. So the smaller company will have had the idea and done the initial research and then they will sell the whole package (if it’s good enough) on to a big pharmaceutical company. The money they recieve will allow them to bring on other ideas. The big pharmaceutical company will then continue the process to completion (marketed drug).
The idea of finding the magic pill to cure all cancers or other such widespread disease is becoming less believable. Research is being done to look at someones genetic profile and how they respond to different drugs both in how effective they are and any side effects they see. It may be in the future that you will have drugs presribed to you according to your genetic profile.
Companies are also accepting that they can make money designing drugs towards much less widespread diseases.

It’s really difficult to predict the future but one thing that is very likely to happen is that we will become more and more reliant on technology to help us find the answers to our questions.

I think that there will always be a place for scientists in the world, someone has to develop new technologies, tecniques and ways of looking for things. Until they invent robots to do it all I think we’re ok!
