I’ve never really linked my job directly to the economic development of this country, the fact that good quality scientific research is still being done in the UK must have a financial impact as the goverment have just invested 44million into the research campus that I’m based on to expand the facilities for small biotech companies. If we can continue to conduct our research in the UK then we are supporting other scientific companies as well. Of course the cherry on the cake would be to find a drug which works in the clinic and can go to the end of the process and make it on the market. As that drug would be sold around the world it would bring a large amount of revenue into the UK.

Good question! Some of my work has looked at how different diseases develop in different countries and even within rich and poor regions of our country. Did you know that poorer people in our country don’t live as long as richer people? There are lots of reasons for this including diet and poor housing conditions, but its also the case that they are less likely to go to the doctor when something is wrong. We are working hard to try and change this to make health outcomes more equal for everyone.

I work for the NHS and we activly try to reduce the amount we spend as a department. This can be tough as we don’t want to compromise patient care in the process.
