For my current job it was because after working in industry for 10 years I thought that the regulator’s role – determining levels of performance to meet safety standards – sounded really interesting to me (& i wasn’t wrong).
If it is what got me into radioactive waste disposal? That was not on purpose. I went to an interview for a job, not really thinking I wanted to work in ”nuclear’ but i liked the people i would be working for, gave it a go and it worked out just fine! Completely unplanned career route to opt for radioactive waste.
I’ve just started as a graduate Materials Scientist, and I think there’s two main things that inspired me to do this job:
1. I’ve always been so interested in science and technology, and I just love learning about the world around me. So, naturally, I wanted to keep doing science everyday and this job could do that for me!
2. I’m seriously concerned about climate change, and think we need to all act now to save the planet we see today. I firmly believe that nuclear power can and will help us achieve our Net Zero targets, but more work needs to be done. That’s why I wanted to join the cause and have a small impact on the move towards clean energy.
Actually, to know that I am working on something which can solve some issues we have currently. Also, nuclear waste storage affects future generations, so I want to say to my children one day that I did the best possible to make it easier for them to deal with it.
