I once helped to run a training course for the Romanian regulators. It was really interesting to have to explain things in an understandable way and try to make it fun of course. Having the chance to meet regulators and hear about their country’s nuclear industry and regulation was also very useful.
This also meant we got to spend 3 weeks in Bucharest which is a beautiful city – it was designed just after Paris by the same architect and so has some similarities. I got a chance to do some sightseeing in the weekends and it has some quite crazy local driving habits which involves lots of tearing around, honking horns and shouting at each other – also similar to Paris!
I also did one for South Korean regulators but sadly I didn’t get to visit South Korea for that.

Having the opportunity to work on the construction of the Nuclear Power plant in Finland was great. It was my first job that was in the Nuclear Industry and it is where I got to be aware of all the safety and requirements needed when constructing a nuclear power plant. It got me so interested that I decided to do a remote course with the Open University on Nuclear Power so I could learn more (I never thought I’d do further studying just for fun – but I found the subject fascinating).
I also loved this project as it gave me the opportunity to work with people from so many other countries and in a wonderful country .

There’s been a few! At the first site I worked on I used to do some inspections, to make sure the buildings were still in good condition and didn’t need any emergency repairs. It was really interesting walking round parts of the site that nobody had visited in years, as well as seeing things that very few people would get to see, like the reactor pressure vessels (that house the reactors themselves) and the huge refuelling machines!

Right now I’m researching unexpected interactions between nuclear waste and water, which I’m really enjoying and will help the government decide where to store our nuclear waste long-term, and what method of storage will be best.

I really enjoyed working on a project that treated nuclear waste. It was a new build project (they were constructing the buildings and the hardware from scratch) and I got to work with a big team doing the software. It was early in my career and I got to see lots of different parts to the project.

I suppose my PhD is made up of lots of smaller projects. I once made a mock-up of my sensor with playdoh inside a see-through casing for a conference [it was only one afternoon] but I really enjoyed it.
Explaining the different parts of my sensor, why they are important to and the reasons behind the design choices was really satisfying.

My favourite project was helping to be part of the team building the new nuclear power station, Hinkley Point C. Being part of the construction team, knowing that you are playing your part in ensuring the UK is having less of an impact on our climate and a positive impact on our future is really rewarding.

I developed a radiation detection system for some wastes at one of our power stations to ensure that waste packages are produced compliantly. I did all the calibration, testing and commissioning of the system, including both the instrumentation and the software. I still support the site today, now that the system has been operational for a couple of years, with any issues they encounter.
