A particle accelerator (such as the Large Hadron Collider) is something that makes particles that are smaller than atoms (such as electrons, protons and neutrons) that we want to investigate go at nearly the speed of light (300,000,000 metres every second!). We normally then crash them into something (usually another particle) and see what happens.
