I have cloned different genes to give bacteria extra abilities (either to tell them apart in the lab, or other exciting things). These includes a gene to make bacteria blue when they insert a certain compound, a gene to make them glow green, several different antibiotic resistance genes, and different proteins for different bacterial immune systems. I think one of the biggest cloning projects I did was giving a certain bacterial species (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) a whole new immune system by cloning!
(Sadly it turned out that that immune system wasn’t actually super effective against Pseudomonas viruses).
