I use a few different pieces of equipment in my experiments. Usually, I need human volunteers – they sit in a room and I monitor them. Sometimes I am interested in where they are looking, so I use a machine called an eye-tracker which tells me where on a screen they are currently looking. Sometimes I might be interested in which parts of their brain are working, so I would use something called an EEG (electro-encephalography), which required them to wear a hat full of electrodes. The volunteers would usually be asked to perform some sort of task, such as searching for a symbol among other similar symbols, memorising a series of symbols, or trying to recognise pictures of faces – this would depend on the particular hypothesis being tested.
