Very good question. There is a theory that we lost our fur to make us better swimmers. It’s called the “aquatic ape theory”. It says that man’s ape ancestors lived by the seaside and gradually lost their fur because it was a hindrance to their catching fish. It’s the same theory that explains why humans are the only ape that can hold its breath voluntarily (so we can dive), and helps to explain how we got big brains – because fish is rich in Omega 3, which is good for brain development!

There could be many explanations, all based on the evolutionary survival value of not having fur, and many different reasons, acting together, could all be true. One group of reasons could be to do with sexual selection. If Mr ape preferred a Mrs ape who was less furry, and vice versa, then it doesn’t take long for fur to disappear after a few generations. Also, fur catches bits of food, which then go rotten. So perhaps furry mates are more smelly and less attractive. Similarly, fur is a good place for creepy crawlies to hide — someone with that kind of entourage is not the kind of person you want to share your quality time with.

Hygiene!! less fur means less poo stuck to your bum and less nasty skin infections. You can therefore run faster and are much more likely to get a girlfriend…
