I think the big bang was the start of everything. Around 13 billion years ago all matter was concentrated into a single point which enlarged into an explosion which is still expanding today. It wasn’t for another 8.5 billion years until Earth was formed.
For a very long time Earth was a molten mass until it cooled down and formed the first land and oceans.
BBC has a nice website about the big bang and the beginning of our solar system -http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/universe/questions_and_ideas/big_bang/
After the big bang, when the world started to form, initially it was really really hot, temperature going up to a 1000 degrees or more. however slowly, it started cooling and water bodies and oceans started to form. This took a few billion years! The first bacterial fossils are dated back to 3.5 billions years!! This led to evolution and formation of other unicellular organisms such as algae who are the ancestors of almost all the living creatures that have existed today.
