If I am completely honest I am not sure what happens during a heart attack. However one of the wonderful parts of my job is that I work as part of a research team, which means there are many people with different skills and training. So I went to one of the medical doctors I work with and asked him your question and the response he gave me was:-
“The heart is a big pump that needs constant ‘energy’ in the form of oxygen to keep going. The oxygen is delivered to our hearts in our blood through tubes called arteries. In a heart attack these tubes get blocked so the heart can’t get its oxygen and this results in damage to the heart or a heart attack.”
Thanks for your question, I learned something new by finding out the answer for you! That is the great thing about research you are always learning something new.
