Interesting question 🙂 Not long at all is the short answer. The brain requires a lot of energy that is fuelled by blood flow to it, so removing it from the heart (and the huge drop in blood pressure) will cause some catastrophic failures pretty quickly. On a related note, in the 1940’s, there was a controversial ‘beheaded’ chicken called ‘Miracle Mike’ who apparently survived 18 months after beheading. However, it managed to live because its brainstem and blood supply was left intact. (the areas responsible for vital functions in organs such as heart and lungs).
