I LOVE being a microbiologist. I find microorganisms fascinating – we are sharing our world with a vast amount of different types of these tiny invisible creatures and most of the time we don’t even realise it! They are incredibly adaptable – they can live on almost any surface, and use many different things as food sources (even petrol, and plastic!), they evolve very quickly, and the more you find out about them them more interesting they are. Many people think we need to fight microorganisms or get rid of them but that is not correct, we actually need microbes to stay healthy. In fact the Earth as we know it wouldn’t exist without microbes helping everything along – from fixing nitrogen so plants can grow, to living in cows guts so they can digest grass. It’s like a whole parallel invisble world!
