Mars is called a Red planet because of its red surface. The red colour is due to the iron rust just like a rusty nail or metal chain. I had a look into few pictures of what Mars looks like and this link has very good telescope photographs and an interactive picture where you can zoom in on the surface of Mars (1st pic in the link).
