Hair is something I’ve always had an interest in, mainly about how to style. I used to dye my girlfriend’s (now my Wife) hair when we were students, and then I learned how to straighten / curl and do updos for her too. I did cut her hair a couple of times, but only trims – she didn’t trust me to do any more! I grew my hair out about 5 years ago and found that it was really curly, so became interested in how to look after my curly hair and which products were best for that. From a scientist perspective I was quite skeptical about people saying how curly hair didn’t do well with sulfates and silicones (found in a lot of shampoos and conditioners), but when I tried alternative products that were free from these (they contained natural oils instead), I found that my curls got curlier and my hair was less frizzy too. Now I spent some of my spare time experimenting with different curly-friendly products to find the best combinations for my hair. I think some people would think that this would be more interesting to girls, but I totally disagree with this. I don’t know enough about cosmetic formulations, but it would be cool to develop my own range of curly hair products one day.
