What a great question! Even when we are asleep (or not fully conscious) the cells in our brains (the neurons) still send out signals as pulses. These pulses and chemical signals connect with receptors to create thoughts. Because we are not conscious and so can’t properly interpret the signals that reach receptors, in dreams our thoughts are not always logical or rational but can still give us insights into literally “what’s on our mind”.

Great question but I think Ciorsdaidh has answered that better than I ever could 🙂

As for as I am concerned, dreaming looks like computer disk cleanup. When in dreams, the brain starts to scan all the documents existing in our minds and try to sort them out. Some information hiding deep into our unconscious mind would possibly come out and give us a surprise in dreams. Seems like Pensieve in Harry Potter Movies! And when we desire to see someone or fear something during daytime, these memories would possibly be excavated by brains and present as chaotic images.
