        probably because they are shiny and rare. people like to have rare things.

        If a remember diamonds are only rare because a cartel controls the number of diamond on the market.

        Either because they are difficult to get or are much expensive. People like to show off if they have got something rare.

        If you are talking about rare earth element, they are not rare. For instance cerium is actually the 25th most abundant element in Earth’s crust.
        If you are talking about others metals like palladium and platinum, they are precious because they are difficult to get..
