Human beings and other animals have had cancer throughout recorded history.
Th cause remains the same that cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control.
Our body is made up of 100 million million cells. Cancer can start when just one of them begins to grow and multiply too much.

cancer is just when a cell goes wrong and just starts to grow. it will have existed as long as there has been life.

Mutation (when a protein is not synthesis correctly by your body). But mutation occurs every minutes in your body. A mutation may be beneficial, harmful, or make no difference at all. In general mutations are eliminated but sometimes. Therefore, the likelihood of one mutation leading to cancer is small. Usually, it takes multiple mutations over a lifetime to cause cancer.

Its synonymous to the question, how did life start? When we get an answer to this question, we will know how did it start.

But, usually, mutations would be responsible.
