Although It was Robert Boyle who first discovered and described the reaction between iron filings and dilute acids, which results in hydrogen gas production, the credit is given to Henry Cavendish as he recognised hydrogen to be a discrete element and called it ‘flammable air’. Hydrogen was named by Antoine Lavoisier who proved Cavendish’s theory right.
