Neglected tropical diseases (NTD’s) are a group of 20 different diseases that affect people in poor countries between the tropics. They are caused by different bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites and have serious consequences ranging from disfigurement and disability to death. They are called neglected as there has historically been limited funding for policy/research as there is no economic return for the cost of developing treatments. I worked on the parasites that cause trypanosomiasis (African and American) and Leishmaniasis.
