I never wanted to do another job. But what basically made me become an academic scientist was (i) I found out work as a laboratory technical in local refinery when I was a student that I didn’t like being to what to do and doing the same thing day after day and (ii) that really the only job open to be where I set my own path was to become an academic scientist.
I thought about going into nutrition but I didn’t like the idea of a desk job. Chemistry and working in the lab sounded really exciting in comparison to nutrition so I went into chemistry. Ironically, I now primarily work at a desk (but still within chemistry) and I really enjoy it. A real lesson in not judging something you don’t know.
