It’s mixed, it feels great to complete the thesis and viva, but it can be a little bit disheartening doing corrections after the viva as you have to focus on what wasn’t good enough. Overall though it feels good to have completed it and I learned so much. It’s also pretty cool to have Dr in front of your name.
I felt great after getting my PhD… However, the PhD robes at Heriot-Watt University are bright pink… fuchsia in colour. I hated the robes. Spent the next 15 years working towards getting a DSc so I could dump the “pinks” and get into a decent colour gown at graduation ceremonies.
After submitting my PhD thesis there was both a moment of glory and one of relief. Knowing that my work is a unique contribution to knowledge is quite surreal.
Absolutely amazing! Doing a PhD can be a real rollercoaster with some great highs, but sometimes lows too. When I finished and submitted my thesis it felt like a huge weight had been lifted but was a massive achievement! Passing the viva examination at the end (where you’re asked lots of in depth questions on all aspects of your thesis by experts in the field) was fab as well. Even 18 months on, it still feels surreal!

It’s a roller coaster of ups and downs but actually doing the research and adding to knowledge is brilliant
