I looked forward to going to the lab and conducting experiments or watching when my teacher demonstrated the more risky ones. The enjoyment that I experienced made me decide that it was for me, I just wanted to learn more and more.
There are probably two things that made me a scientist… Firstly I enjoy doing science, learning about new stuff and telling people about it. That started way back in primary school with a couple of teachers who encouraged me in the direction of science. High school teachers reinforced that direction. Secondly, at university I knew I wanted to follow a scientific career. I spent 3 summer vacations working in the BP Refinery in Grangemouth as realised that I didn’t really like being told what to do in terms of the science. So basically, if I wanted to blaze my own trail, I would have to become an academic scientist. So I did!
I enjoyed science at school, and I was fairly good at it, so chose to study Chemistry at University. I was interested in a career in research, but it wasn’t until my masters year (4th year of uni) during a 9 month research project that I realised it is the career I wanted. From there I applied for funded PhDs to allow me to continue researching.
