I look at transverse vibrations (perpendicular to a line of atoms) by the way of the tilting of octahedra which contract my layered structures. These vibrations also lower the thermal conductivity (how well a structure conducts heat). Please ask questions, I’m more than happy to talk to you about this!
Figure showing how vibrations perpendicular to the line of atoms cause the structure to contract

My Typical Day:
I wake up at half past 7 and usually have some eggs or some cereal. I get to work at about 10am where I do a mix of labwork and analysis. Then I have lunch with the research group (or my handball/salsa friends) and then get back to work! I go home at 6pm usually, but this varies depending on if I have salsa dancing or not
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I want to find a way of engaging the public with more niche scientific research that isn’t really talked about, i.e. phenomena rarely seen of talked about by anyone outside of a STEM background. The research done by groups nowadays is extremely significant for a variety of reasons and people should know it exists and what it’s there for!
