I am a chemist by training, so I enjoy applying my experience in synthesising new molecules to the field of chemical biology. Specifically, I work at the interface between chemistry and biology to understand more about cancer. By chemically attaching special probes (which light up when they interact with a high-power laser) I can look at how anti-cancer drugs behave inside cells. This is an important field because, in order to develop new drugs that can beat cancer, we need to understand where these drugs go inside cells. This will help us to know how much drug we need to take, how effective they are, and if there are any unusual side effects.
