Hmm, probably carbon – because it can make four bonds with other elements. And it can bond to itself in different ways to be graphite in your pencil or with the right conditions (very high pressure) it could be diamond! Very cool!
Caesium – Cs. From its position on the periodic table, this element looks like it would have very simple chemistry, but its behaviour in the environment turns out to be quite complicated. I studied two radioisotopes of this element (Cs-134 and Cs-137) during my PhD (which I finished in 1979) – but these turned out also to be very important when I was helping plan clean-up after the Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan.
