I really don’t know. I read the magazine “New Scientist” every week and there are lots of articles about the big bang, but the ideas are so crazy that I can’t get my head round them. This seems to be where astronomy (cosmology) gets linked to quantum mechanics. As the famous physicist Richard Feynman said – “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.” And he was a lot smarter than me!
In my opinion it’s the best theory we’ve got so far and a lot of clever people have thought about it. But it is only a theory so it might get changed and adapted as we obtain more data (which scientists are doing) – that’s the nature of science.
A lot of physicists seem to think it is – it’s the best conclusion we can currently make, given the observable facts we have. No doubt it will be refined or even completely changed in the future, as more data is obtained.
