• Question: Why do auto-immune diseases happen?

      This is a great question and this is a subject of some very current research. An auto immune disease is when the body’s immune system starts attacking yourself. Now why this happens is still unknown but there are many theories that have been thought of and research is being done to prove or disprove them. Theories include it could be genetic in some way, or more recently a bacteria or virus may have been entered the body that confuses the immune system and causes it to attack. Most autoimmune diseases target one organ e.g Type 1 diabetes affects the pancreas!

      I’m not entirely sure on this sorry, but I believe it is when your own body starts recognising your own cells as ‘foreign’ i.e. not part of your body, eventually leading to your own immune system attacking your own cells
