PhD is a doctor of philosophy in your chosen subject. Mine is microbiology, which is the study of bacteria.

PhD is the highest academic qualification that is awarded by a university! It means you will become a doctor (Dr), but not a medical doctor that you go and see when you are sick but a Doctor of whatever subject you study! It means you know an awful lot about your topic!

So Emma and Christopher answered well to what is a PhD. My is about soil ecology. I am looking how the whole system (and particularly the bugs inside it) is working and how it affects us.
