Science hours are quite unpredictable and it really depends on what type of experiments you have to do, that determine how many hours you work in a day. As i am in a research job I usually work 8hrs but this may be more if I have a lot going on, or a bit less if i have a quiet day. But I know PhD students work for much longer sometimes!
It does vary a lot. Some time the lab work require a lot of time and I am usually staying long hours. My most productive time is not necessarily during working hours either. I am lucky enough to work with people that understand that and I can adapt when I want or not to work.
It does depend on experiments as Emma said. I have some days where I work 9-5pm- so a relatively normal day, but other days I have to start at 6am and can finish as late as 9pm. And plus we can find ourselves in at the weekend sometimes! But this is because I’m a PhD student at the moment and we have a set amount of time (3 years) to answer a research question, this may seem like a long time but it is amazing how fast the time goes and how slow some experiments can be. Hopefully when I get a job there will be more of a set routine going on!
