I don’t actually work on any diseases, I am an Envrionmental Microbiologist: I study how microorganisms can be used to generate renewable energy to help reduce the impacts of climate change.
It’s difficult to know if you are close to finding a cure for a disease as there are so many steps to take. We might think we have something but it would still take much more effort to prove it, then make it safe to use in humans!
I haven’t personally but myself and the other members of my lab group all work with bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria), we are all looking at this but with different types of bacteria e.g. a few of us are looking and bacteriophages and C. difficile (this is my project too), others are working with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, Salmonella and other bacteria that causes infections of the lungs.
We are all getting closer to find bacteriophages that could be used as a treatment against some nasty infections, however as Emma mentioned this takes years and years of work as many tests have to be completed in the lab first and then only can it be tested to see if it’ll be safe on humans! It’s a long process!
