• Question: Who pays for all of your experiments?

      Various charitable organisations such as Wellcome trust, Medical research council etc. My work is also funded by Food Standards Agency and by the Scottish government 😀 We have to ask for money or ‘grants’ the agencies will then decide after we submit a proposal if they are willing to give us the money to do the study…sometimes they don’t 🙁 but its ok…we ask for other funding bodies

      Working for a contract research company means the money for the experiments come from the clients themselves. Our clients tend to be small biotech companies and Pharmaceutical companies. They get money from a range of sources, some grants similar to those Bruno has mentioned.

      My research is funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund which gives money to researchers to find ways of solving big problems like climate change, drug resistance, major illnesses etc. As Bruno says, scientists have to spend a lot of time writting up their ideas and competing for money to get to try them out. It is sooooo disapointing when you dont get the money but really exciting when you do!

      Various different funding bodies, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are two big supporters.
