Hi Isabelle
I study how the brain works. So we get people to come in as volunteers for us to study their brains. Usually this means that we have to get them to come to the particular place where our equipment is. We use scannners like hospitals have to get pictures of their brains while they are doing a particular task, like listening to language. That helps us to know which bits of the brain are important for understanding language.
We always try and work in teams of at least 2 people when running these experiments. It is a lot more fun and makes it easier when something goes wrong like the equipment not working properly.
Most of my experiments need special equipment, so I need to do them in the lab. The experiments I do at home are a little more mundane (how long does it take to dry two wet towels in the tumble dryer? Does that change if I want to try three? Does that change if I put in dryer balls as well?).
Doing experiments with friends and colleagues is usually more interesting, you can talk about ideas, watch results s they come in ad try to figure out what they mean, and some bits of equipment are just more efficient to run with two people operating it.
I tend to do my experiments at work because that’s where all the fancy equipment is! I have very good colleagues at work and it’s always more fun to work together.
I really enjoy doing science experiments with my Nieces and Nephews at home- they sometimes get annoyed with me always trying to make them learn something, but I think it’s really fun!
