No – £500 will barely get any of us anywhere I don’t think, which is why I’d like to use the money to engage students rather than on a project.
There are lots of funding bodies for research – charities, government organisations, public and private organisations. For example, I have a bid under review at the moment for £220,000 – that would pay most of my salary (so I won’t do any teaching) for about 2 and a half years.
As Jermaine said, this money would not get me very far with any of my projects. I am still completing my PhD but there are grants I can apply for if I find the money I receive from this is not enough.
£500 is very little in practical terms to do any research. It’s the sort of sum that might allow to go and travel someplace to talk about your work – that sort of thing.
I have looked into another small pot of £300 at my University that might follow on well from this competition.
Most projects cost tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands. The money from this project is small, but winning a prize does suggest a good idea – so it’s good for that reason, to maybe help get more funds from elsewhere.
£500 isn’t alot in the wider scheme of things, and it has to go to the small projects outlined on our profiles here anyway. At postgraduate level a lot of funding is either self-funding, or through a big research body, or University.
