Meitnerium was discovered in 1982 and is named after the Austrian-Swedish physicist Lise Meitner, who worked on radioactivity and nuclear physics. In 2016 the Institute of Physics established the Lise Meitner Medal and Prize for distinguished contributions to public engagement within physics.
