• Question: What kinds of experiments have you done in the past ?

      I actually mostly do maths and programming, so I run lots of “experiments” inside computer simulations.

      One physical experiment I did, was testing a system to break up kidney stones using shock waves (this is called shock wave lithotripsy). The stones I used were fake stones that were perfectly spherical and we used a tank of water instead of a person. After every shock wave that went through the stone, we scanned the stone to watch cracks form and extend inside the stone.

      I work a lot with radioactive materials. I do a lot of image quality testing on our gamma camera to make sure its working correctly. I also did a research project to measure the amount of patients being emitted by some of our therapy patients and calculating the risk to other people.

      In my first degree I was investigating self-building components of molecular sized motors using lasers.

      Most of the experiments I’ve done so far were either in school or at uni; you’ve probably already done very similar ones! The latest one I did was to look at the impact of gamma camera parameters on image quality, as part of my training.

      Loads of different things. Made a superconductor in furnace and tested it’s properties. Dissected a human brain to look at it’s structure and compare it to how it looks on a scanner image
