• Question: I read in a science magazine about a 'pen' that can detect cancerous cells. What d'you think? Here's a link about it: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2016-01/27/pen-detect-cancer-miniature-microscope

So they’ve miniaturised a microscope so they can use it in surgery. If it works, this is really good as it allows surgeons to be a lot more confident that they’ve removed all of the caner before closing a person up. You need to remove all of the cancer because if you don’t, the remaining cancerous cells will grow back, usually quite fast.

I don’t know what compromises the designers will have had to make to get their microscope this small. I suspect that it gets less light inside, which means that they have to amplify their image more, so they get more noise – like when you take a picture on your phone in a dark room and there are lots of coloured dots on it. If it works though, technology like this could be really useful.
