• Question: How many different types of autism is there?

      I think there is quite a range of severity, and people with autism do not necessarily have it to the same degree as others

      I think there is 4 main sub types but as Paul said there is a range of severity on the autism spectrum.

      I think one important thing to remember is that we don’t really know a lot about autism, so it’s still largely defined by its symptoms. That means that there are basically as many types as we say there are, because nobody has yet been able to say “This is type one autism which is caused by X, that is type 2 autism because it’s caused by something else.” Doctors have classified several different conditions, and a few years ago they brought them all under the banner of “Autistic Spectrum Disorder”. It’s worth remembering though, every autistic person, just like every other person, is unique.

      There is aren’t really any distinct types of autism because it actually covers a wide spectrum of symptoms and conditions. There are different causes so people are normally ranked on a scale of how sever their autism is.
