Scientists now all that space, time and the universe were all created in the big bang, 14 or 15 billion years ago. It has been spreading outwards ever since. When the big bang happened, all the atoms in the universe were flung outwards, but there were some that were a bit more ‘clumped together’ than others, so these clumps got drawn together under their own gravity to form stars and planets. If we look at the sky, we can still see the aftermath of the big bang, and how some bits were hotter and more ‘clumpy’ than others. You can’t see it with your eyes though, as it’s at microwave frequencies: try googling “cosmic microwave background radiation” and you’ll get a picture of it.
As for what there was before the big bang, who knows?! It’s a question about before the universe was created, so it’s not really one that science can answer.
