That’s a very deep question. I don’t think anyone knows really. The brain works by transmitting electrical signals through a network of billions of neurons. We can actually measure this indirectly using MRI or we can actually detect the magnetic fields produced by the brain from these electrical signals using a MEG scanner. There are different rhythms and frequencies that the electrical signals occur at. We can ask a participant to perform an activity and see which parts of the brain become active and which parts talk to each other.
Back to your question, consciousness is a high level function and probably involves most parts of the brain. It could also be an extension of our ability to recognise objects.
