At the moment I am not doing research, most of my work is routine patient treatment. Our department does take part in clinical trials, so some of our treatment plans have to follow very strict criteria for the trial. Then a few years later, the researchers publish the outcome of the study which may show which treatment was most effective, or had least side effects, or was easier for patients or the hospital but was no less effective.
In our department we do sometimes do local studies to find out the best way of using our equipment or checking we’re all doing things the same way or comparing methods of doing something and choosing the best/fastest/cheapest. We’d probably call it development work rather than research.
